THE TEXTURE OF TIME

THE TEXTURE OF TIME
Woodblock Prints: Catherine Rubin
April 3 to April 27, 2025
opening reception: Saturday, April 5, 4-6:00 pm

Often, in thinking of time, we see it as linear: a continuous line with the past behind us, the present unfolding, and the future ahead. But time is not a straight path. It is laid in layers, stacked upon each other, like grains of sand on a beach shifting in place from the forces of wind and water. In my work, I aim to express these layers – both the layers of time itself and the texture of the place where they occurred. The result is a compilation of those moments: what we have seen, heard, and most importantly, felt.

My primary working process is reduction woodblock, meaning that the block is gradually destroyed as the print is created. This reflects both the nature of our experience and lends itself to the capture of multiple moments expressed as a single image. The print can never be replicated – it is built layer by layer, until almost nothing remains of the wood block. These are moments carved in wood, moments captured where there was a contrast felt in the layers of time and experience. It is these fleeting moments of lightness, where many layers can be felt at once, that I wish to share with the viewer – moments not simply confined to the past, but unfolding within us all at once.

MIXED TAKES: Susan Wooddell Campbell

Mixed Takes
Susan Wooddell Campbell
February 27 to March 30, 2025

opening reception: Sunday, March 9, 2-4:00 pm

It’s no coincidence that MIXED TAKES evokes both the infamous 1980s mixtapes (personalized music playlist, for those too young to remember) and the notorious shaming word mistakes. But is there really any such thing as a mistake when it comes to the happy accidents that are part of the creative process?  MIXED TAKES aptly describes my process of using different registrations, passes and media as “takes” to employ rhythm and movement in creating my personal play list (emphasis on play).

Still a painter at heart, I love using printmaking techniques as an adjunct in building work and creating relationships and dialogues between pieces. I have been exploring viscosity print techniques, which share intriguing qualities with painting in oil – a first love. The show contains several examples of oil paintings and related viscosity prints.

Other pieces are related through the use of found objects – in this case, industrial paint stir sticks, which gave birth to Indigo Trail, Bamboo Sun, and Glyph. Providing a range of final results or takes, my play and exploration using woodcut and viscosity techniques has resulted in a mixtape / mixed take of my creative world.

Kristine DeNinno — Women’s Work

Women's Work
January 30 to February 23, 2025

opening reception: Saturday, February 1, 4-6:00 pm
galentines* free printmaking workshop:
Thursday, February 13, 4-6:00 pm
closing reception: Sunday, February 23, 2-4:00 pm

I created a series of large-scale monoprints that explore the multifaceted experiences of “Women’s Work.” These visually abstract narratives address issues of societal expectations, liberation and the enduring strength of the female spirit.

The monoprints are layers of marks that include hidden gestural portraits in reference to strong women who have influenced changes in our society. The monotype process allows for spontaneity and its singular nature speaks to the fluidity and individuality of women’s lives.

Fiber work is incorporated into the prints, a nod to unjust stereotypes, and often unrecognized contributions. Sewing has long been a traditional activity linked to domesticity, feminine virtues, and rebellion. It can represent societal constraints, the pressure to conform, and the limitations imposed upon women historically.

In the current environment I find it more and more important to recognize the efforts of “Women’s Work” in our world.

* a date to celebrate female friendships and the bonds between women.

Suzanne Bartlett, in her Forest Women seriesemploys new approaches to her decades-long interest in layering images and symbols in a variety of mediums. Best-known for her sculpted textile paintings and assemblages that provoke engagement with a history of women’s work and lives, she brings to this new printed series totems and talismans made of vintage dresses, paper castings, lace, antique pattern tissue and found bits.

Beauty belies the labor buried within it: Bartlett melds traditional craft forms with photographic and digital tools in her distinctive constructions.
